Iran is a Pimple We Must Squeeze

MI6 has established that Hezbollah is poised to launch a new "rain of terror" on Israel with rockets equipped with "dirty bomb" nose cones.

"The nose cones will contain spent nuclear rods from Iran's nuclear programme. The rods are wrapped with conventional explosives. The dirty bombs are primarily intended to create increased panic across an already nervous population in northern Israel," claimed a senior intelligence officer in London.


And we actually have members of Congress calling on Israel to back off.

Amazing.

It is not time for the US to back off, or to attempt to bully Israel to back off. Whether or not people like it or not, Israel must succeed in this war. There is no Plan "B" in the event of failure.

And don't forget - something could happen here just as easily. It is an older story, but G2 also reported back in April:

MI6, Britain's secret intelligence service, has identified six Pakistani scientists working in Iran's nuclear bomb program who have been "advising al-Qaida on how to weaponize fissionable materials it has now obtained."

Old News, But... We Have the Castle Doctrine!

Michigan is the newest Castle Doctrine state!

Governor Granholm signed the legislation while I was "on duty" during the National Matches at Camp Perry, so I haven't written by thank you's yet. While there was wireless internet access available, it never seemed to work right, and I'd spent my time instead watching "Ocean's 11" and other cool movies instead of going into town and finding a connection that worked. So, I apologize for getting out my sincere "thanks" so late.

Credit must go where credit is due. First to the countless self-defense and 2nd amendment grass-roots advocates who bravely lead the charge to protect those in their cars or homes engaged against criminal elements. Several organizations were involved as well. To each of you, "thank you."

Next, I thank those who introduced the six bills comprising the Castle Doctrine package. Special thanks also to the staff members for all their assistance. The six bills were introduced by Senators Alan Cropsey and Ron Jelinek, and Representatives Rick Jones, Tim Moore, Leslie Mortimer and Tom Casperson.

Third, to those 80% of legislators who passed this sensible legislation. While the bills were introduced by Republicans, there was good bi-partisan support to pass these bills with an 80%+ approval.

Finally, thanks to Governor Jennifer Granholm (D), who used her pen in a showing of ultimate bi-partisan support as she signed the Castle Doctrine into being.

The law takes effect on October 1, 2006.

On July 20, Governor Jennifer Granholm (D) signed into law a package of six self-defense bills backed by NRA, bringing "Castle Doctrine" protections to law-abiding Michigan citizens.

"I want to thank the Michigan Legislature and Governor Jennifer Granholm for working together in making this victims' rights bill law," said NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox. "When you're confronted by a criminal, you don't have the luxury of time. This "Castle Doctrine" package states that if victims choose to stand their ground and fight, their decision will not be second-guessed by the State of Michigan. The ability to protect yourself, your children, or your spouse from harm is important, whether you're in your home or outside."

The six-bill "Castle Doctrine" Package passed with bi-partisan, supermajority support in both houses of the Michigan legislature:

HB 5143, sponsored by Rep. Rick Jones (R-71), creates the "Self Defense Act" and specifies that it is not a crime to use force or deadly force to defend oneself if that person is not breaking any laws when defensive force was used. The person must be facing imminent threat of death or great bodily harm.

SB 1046, sponsored by Sen. Alan Cropsey (R-33), outlines rebuttal presumptions for justified use of self-defense. The bill makes it clear that there is no "duty to retreat" if a person is in a place where he or she has a legal right to be.

SB 1185, sponsored by Sen. Ron Jelinek (R-21), allows for the award of court and attorney fees in civil cases where it was determined a person acted in accordance with the "Self Defense Act" and where civil immunities apply.

HB 5548, sponsored by Rep. Tim Moore (R-97), gives civil immunities to persons acting in accordance with the "Self Defense Act," preventing criminals and their families from suing law-abiding citizens.

HB 5153, sponsored by Rep. Leslie Mortimer (R-65), puts the burden of proof on the prosecutor to show that a person acted unlawfully in the application of force, rather than the person using the force having to prove they acted lawfully.

HB 5142, sponsored by Rep. Tom Casperson (R-108), expands the definition of "dwelling" to include a person's garage, barn, backyard, etc.




Heat Wave

Ah, what a beautiful day. As I went to work this morning, my car's thermometer registered 80 degrees at 7am. The Weather Channel had this interesting tidbit for the Detroit area on their website:

I love this weather. I imagine it will be one of those days when the different news media sources beg people to stay inside or they will melt and die. Screw that - these are great days. Michigan is rather cold so much of the year, it is time to get out and celebrate. Mow the lawn. Enjoy the hot weather - September is coming quickly.

Camp Perry Moments

This marked the 100th anniversary of the National Matches. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Camp Perry.

Camp Perry is an Ohio National Guard facility on Lake Erie in Northern Ohio. Lake Erie is one of the Great Lakes, and has been around for about 100 years. It has, as you might expect, some fantastic shooting ranges... and as an added bonus, the bordering city, Port Clinton, is the walleye capital of the world. Nothing better than being around rifles all day and overdoing it on walleye at night.

I especially enjoyed watching the Army Marksmanship Unit. I had the honor of meeting Army Major Michael Anti during the week as he won his third National Smallbore Rifle NRA Three-Position Championship. Major Anti finished third in the Prone Metallic Sight competition with a score of 3192-234X. An excellent shot and a true gentleman.

Worst case scenario, I'll be back on the 28th.

GOA/NRA Confusion

I was reading the GOA email update about the recent passage of the Vitter amendment. No big deal. I saw they had only 16 senators vote against it, even though many there are many more senators with an "F" ranking. "Good job, GOA," I thought. Of course, when I read the NRA Vitter-amendment-email, the NRA claims all the credit for saving the day. Typical, and irresponsible.

Just for the heck of it, I clicked on the GOA's 109th Senate grades to review them... moved on to the House grades...checked Michigan rankings and found Congressman John Dingell, D-Trenton, with a "D" - again, no big deal, right?

Wrong.

Congressman Dingell is a sweetheart of the NRA and consistently gets high ratings (like A's and A+'s) from the NRA.

Anyone else see a problem? Yeah, sadly we all know this isn't the first time, either.

Senator David Vitter’s amendment to prohibit the use of funds appropriated under the Homeland Security appropriations bill (H.R. 5441) for the confiscation of lawfully possessed firearms during an emergency or major disaster passed the United States Senate with broad bi-partisan support, the final vote margin was 84-16. In the House, Congressman Bobby Jindal of Louisiana introduced HR 5013, the “Disaster Recovery Personal Protection Act of 2006,” an NRA-supported bill amending federal emergency statute laws to stop local authorities from confiscating lawfully owned firearms during times of disaster.

Gee, I don't know what to say. Should I say "thanks"??? Should I sigh and say "has it really come to this?" If I remember my civics class correctly (yeah, it was a long time ago, but my mind isn't that dull), there was something about the Bill of Rights being written out and codified specifically so the rights listed would never be violated. Now it takes a vote from Congress to say, "Yeah, I guess we'll let you keep your 2nd amendment rights a bit longer."

I guess I won't complain - it could be worse.

Iran

Crude oil prices fell more than $1 a barrel Monday on rumors of moves toward peace in the Middle East and in Iran's nuclear standoff with Western nations.


How nice.

"Slim spare capacity, continued demand and a spate of geopolitical threats to supply all point toward bullish oil markets and yet more upward pressure on crude," said Simon Wardell at Global Insight.


Note to Democrats - let's increase our refining capacity here in the US. Let's allow more drilling for oil.

Castle Doctrine - Governor Signature Update

By law, the Castle Doctrine package must be signed by Governor Granholm no later than July 20 - two weeks after both the House and Senate passed the package. All Michigan citizens interested in protecting their right to self-defense must contact the Governor's office and let her know you support the bills.

She is expected to sign the bills, after all, it is an election year. Even if she doesn't, over 80% of legislators approved the package, so it is virtually veto-proof.

But silence and inactivity from Castle Doctrine supporters is absolutely inexcusable. Groups are working around the clock to keep the Governor from signing this bill. Take the few minutes to contact our Governor now, or spend months and thousands of dollars working out your self-defense legal troubles later.

And don't forget why Michigan's Castle Doctrine bill is called the Dr. Ossian Sweet Self-Defense Act. It's a long-established historical fact: People need to defend themselves against hateful brutes.

What Petition Did I Sign?

Lately I've been complaining about a certain post at the State of Michigan website - a post urging citizens to sign an electronic petition demanding President Bush to intervene and lower gas prices.

Apparently others are mad, too - but about something else.

GOP charges governor used gas petition to send e-mail

State Republicans charged Tuesday that Gov. Jennifer Granholm abused the trust and privacy rights of constituents when her campaign solicited support from 280,000 signers of an online petition about gas prices that the governor's office circulated in May.

Michigan GOP Chairman Saul Anuzis accused Granholm of duping citizens who thought they were registering displeasure over soaring gas prices with government officials but were instead signing up for campaign spam.

Repeal the Death Tax

Too many businesses, especially farmers and small enterprises, are forced to shut down in order to pay the estate taxes when the head of household dies. Families should not be punished for hard work and savings – they should be able to leave their businesses to their children.

Death should not be a taxable event.

In June, the Senate voted whether to consider legislation to permanently and completely repeal the tax. This bill was defeated, but following the defeat of full repeal in the Senate, the House of Representatives took up and passed an alternative measure that, while not fully repealing the tax, would permanently reduce the death tax rate and increase the amount of estate exempt from the tax to $5 million ($10 million per couple). The Senate is now likely to take up this permanent reform measure in July.

A permanent change in the law to lower the death tax rate and increase the amount of estate exempt from the tax is a better option than nothing, but we need your help in order to garner the 60 votes necessary to enact even this compromise measure.

New Hunting Laws

Governor Granholm deserves credit for signing a couple of key bills on Monday:


SB 1105 allows new hunters to hunt with a licensed adult for up to two years without taking lengthy hunter education courses. As a big proponent of Hunters Ed courses, I am not too crazy about this - but I am all for things that do not make it harder to hunt.

HB 5192 lowers the legal hunting age from 14 to 12 and 12 to 10 for big game and small game, respectively. This is key because we can get people in the hunting mode before high school activities draw them away... and because what 10-year-old son doesn't want to hunt with Dad?

Newsflash: Detroiters Kill Mastadon

And you thought Michigan only had cars and crime...

Luca and Daniel Haas got an opportunity to do something Monday that few kids their ages will ever get to do. They held the giant tooth of an extinct mammal in their hands.

They were standing at the site of the owner's final resting place. It was uncovered Friday, some 11,000 years after the mastodon died in a swampy area that borders what is now Rochester Hills and Auburn Hills....

Scientists from the Cranbrook Institute of Science sifted through the site Monday morning in search of more remains to add to the ones recovered by road construction crews on Friday....

By 2 p.m. Monday, the work was completed and the peat bog that had preserved the mastodon's remains had been replaced with sand that would serve as the foundation for the extension of Adams Road.

Stafford said that from the tooth recovered, they could discern the mastodon, which has been given the name Adams, was a mature adult.

That means it would have stood about 9 feet tall and weighed as much as 12,000 pounds.


But - we Detroiters may have caused the death of the Mastadon.

Mastodons were fairly common in Michigan in their day, inhabiting the spruce forests that covered the northern parts of the Lower Peninsula.

They roamed the earth for thousands of years before mysteriously dying out by the end of the second Ice Age, about 10,000 years ago.

Their sudden disappearance raised the question about the role man played in their demise, said Stafford, who was particularly interested in searching Adams' remains for signs of human violence, such as cuts to the bone.

I am glad men didn't have guns back then. Imagine how dangerous things would have been for 12,000 pound Mastadons, with Chuck Schumer not due on the scene for another 10,000 years.

We Must Act Now to Punish Small Business Owners

From Michigan's Governor:

95% of gas stations in Michigan are locally owned. They aren’t big oil and they are struggling with these high costs too.

You mean to tell me that I pay over $3 a gallon to gas stations that may be owned by an oil company? How am I to know which station is owned by the honest entrepreneur and which one is owned by eeeevil Big Oil? I thought they were all owned by Big Oil... I never drive down the street and see "Fred's Gas Station." I always see BP and Shell and Standard, etc. You know, Big Oil guys.

As my Governor, I suggest to you that we punish them all. I don't care if Big Oil owns them or a station is owned by my next-door neighbor just trying to make a living. They are hitting me for more than $3. This is un-Constitutional and against my First Amendment rights to have cheap gasoline.

Make them give me free gas to make up for their price-gouging when raw material cost increased and scarcity hit the economic scene. Cap their profits - in fact, don't let them make a profit. Make them operate so they lose money. That'll teach 'em a lesson. Don't screw with our gasoline prices, you eeeevil business owners. How dare you cover your costs.

While we are at it, make everyone in the state turn in their cars and ride bicycles. The state will make a fortune selling scrap to dealers - and properly taxed, the dealers will get socked again when they sell the scrap. What a windfall for the State of Michigan.

And with the "no cars in Michigan" policy, fewer pollutants will be in our air AND it will screw the Big Oil and Big Auto companies by getting rid of demand in this state. When all the Oil and Auto workers lose their jobs, we can blame it on George W. Bush and keep him from winning a third term in office.

Hunting Tournaments?

I've seen the Pro Bass Fishing tourneys on TV, but is a Pro Hunting tourney far behind? Apparently not.

Over the years, I've written about a few things that have really upset people.

But I can't think of anything that has drawn such universal condemnation from hunters as David Farbman's plan to start a professional World Hunting Association, which would operate like a fishing tournament and pay big money to selected hunters who shoot deer with tranquilizing darts on fenced game ranches.

Farbman has lost virtually all of the sponsors he said he had when he announced his plan a month ago, including Gorilla Treestands and Eastman, the biggest maker of arrows. His plan also has been denounced by groups, including Michigan United Sportsmans Clubs and the Black Powder Cartridge Rifle Association.

Both Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops, two of the world's biggest outdoor retailers, have said they oppose the WHA concept and would "encourage" their suppliers not to have anything to do with it.

I always have to admire good capitalism... and so I salute "Pirates of the Carribean" - and even Johnny Depp (a man I have disliked ever since "21 Jumpstreet," but he plays a great pirate!)

After all, aren't the terrorists more civilized than we are? At least more civilized than President Bush? Or has a New York Times writer made up information again?

Israeli Arab Parliment Memeber Urged Kidnapping of Israeli Soldier

An Arab member (MK) of Israel's parliment (the Knesset), acted like a Democrat recently.

Knesset Member Wasal Taha, corresponding publicly with internet surfers on the Arabic-language IslamOnline site, said he repeatedly advised PA terrorists to battle and kidnap Israeli soldiers.

'Castle doctrine' lesson? Stay out of the Wrong Castle

Detractors of Mississippi's new "Castle doctrine" law are fretting as Senate Bill 2426 goes into effect this week.

They say that the law legitimizes the notion of "shoot first and ask questions later."

They say that the law will make it easier for criminals to claim self-defense when they kill someone.

They say that the law will encourage more people to buy guns and empower them to use them without fear of civil liability if they injure or kill someone.

All three of those criticisms are correct.

But there's a simple solution to those problem areas in the "Castle doctrine."

People who stay out of the wrong "castle" should be fine. It's difficult to be shot as an intruder if one only enters homes or cars or businesses to which one has both a key to gain entrance and a legal right to be on the premises.

The new law removes the "duty to retreat" when one is threatened in his or her home, car or in the street. It also removes civil liability from killing an intruder or attacker.

But the protections don't apply when a person claims self-defense when shooting a law enforcement officer or another person who has a lawful right to be on the premises of the shooting.

Further, the "duty to retreat" has never existed in state law prior to the adoption of the "Castle doctrine."

But that's mostly legalese.

The safety valve for the "Castle doctrine" is for burglars, crackheads, carjackers, strong-arm robbers, muggers, rapists, thieves and other assorted boils on the butt of humanity to stay out of homes, cars, stores, offices and other domiciles that don't belong to them and to stop mugging, robbing, raping and stealing.

Those who utilize that course of action aren't terribly likely to be shot. Those who don't likely will be.

Give Me Your Gun or I'll Take Your Life

It looks like the UN is backing down temporarily.

The UN Small Arms Conference ended Friday in deadlock with no formal conclusions or recommendations. In the final analysis, the complexity of the issue and the concerns of hunters, sport shooters and firearms owners world-wide prevailed. No recommendations on ammunition, civilian possession or future UN meetings, or for that matter any other subjects, were adopted. The failure of this five-year program to impact the legitimate firearms industry, and the 2nd Amendment rights of U.S. citizens was total. Anti-gun NGOs and liberal governments served notice they would not give up and would present all of their issues to the UN General Assembly this fall. Thanks should be given to NRA Board members Bob Barr, David Keene and Jim Gilmore for their crucial participation in this significant victory.

The Castle Doctrine and Dr. Ossian Sweet

Michigan residents will notice that the official name of the Castle Doctrine Package is the Dr. Ossian Sweet Self-Defense Act. Why is that? Who was Dr. Sweet?

The inspiration for the bill came from the historical account of Dr. Ossian Sweet’s 1925 trial defending his home against the Ku Klux Klan in Michigan. The case began in 1925 when Ossian Sweet, a Detroit doctor and grandson of slaves, moved his family to a neighborhood where they would be the only black family. This enraged the Ku Klux Klan, who and surrounded his home yelling insults and racial slurs. Some of the crowd rushed and shots were fired from the house. One man was killed and another was injured. Dr. Sweet was charged with murder and eventually acquitted.

Famed attorney Clarence Darrow headed Dr. Sweet's defense team. The Klan had at least 100,000 members in Detroit in 1925. Witnesses - white, non-KKK witnesses, testified that the size of the mob attacking Dr. Sweet's house was at least 400 people. You can read more about Dr. Sweet's ordeal and trial here.

Why should men and women protecting themselves or their family from thugs, be they klansmen or some other kind of hatemonger/murderer/rapist/etc, have to face murder charges for self-defense? It was a travesty in Dr. Sweet's time, and it is a travesty today.

That is why we need to contact Governor Granholm to make sure this legislation passes. I am sure it is just what Dr. Sweet would have ordered.

Why I Think Michigan Governor Granholm (D) Will Sign the Castle Doctrine Bills

As the Castle Doctrine package moves on to Governor Jennifer Granholm's desk, 2A supporters and those interested in securing legal rights to self-defense need to remember while a liberal, she is not completely anti-gun.

Remember Governor Granholm signed House Bill 4642 back in March - this bill became active law on July 1, 2006. HB 4642 allows an individual licensed to carry a concealed firearm to legally carry, possess, use, or transport a firearm belonging to another individual licensed to carry a concealed firearm, as long as the individual's firearm is properly licensed and inspected under this act.

So what? What does this have to do with the Castle Doctrine? Simply, a rabid anti-gunner would not have done this.

We also need to remember that the Castle Doctrine is not necessarily a gun bill - it is a self-defense bill - and it protects people regardless of the weapon they use in their defense. It could be their hands, it could be a hammer, it could be a rolled-up newspaper, it could be a gun...

Don't forget that Governor Granholm's spokeswoman, Liz Boyd, said back in April the Granholm administration would support legislation giving people the right to protect themselves in their homes.

Don't forget that the six bills making up the Castle Doctrine package passed by over 80% of members in the combined legistative bodies voting "yea."

Don't forget a massive majority of Michigan's citizens are in support of the Castle Doctrine.

Don't forget it is an election year.

Don't forget that voters remember Governor Granholm was our Attorney-General before her election... and that voters associate certain flamboyant trial attorneys with the Michigan Democratic Party... and, once again, it is an election year...

Don't forget, speaking of election year, that Michigan's economy is in serious decline as we witness a non-stop hemorrhaging of jobs and businesses.
...a state economy devastated by the struggles of domestic automakers General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. and the bankruptcies of major auto suppliers Delphi Corp. and Tower Automotive Inc. has Michigan voters unhappy with her performance and record numbers saying the state is on the wrong track....Michigan remains the only state besides hurricane-struck Louisiana to lose jobs between May 2005 and May 2006, and has seen its unemployment rate hover two points above the national average

Don't forget she is likely (but not officially until after the Primary) running against a multi-billionaire-tremendously-successful-businessman who's wife was the head of the Michigan Republican Party for years.

    'nuf said... except a reminder to Democrats that he was equal opportunity in his friendships, and this death saves taxpayer money.

    The Dems Don't Like Me - and I'm Not Even a Republican

    I wrote a post yesterday with some simple comments on the State of Michigan's ill-placed blame on President Bush for high gas prices. Michigan is urging citizens, on the state website, to sign a petition to encourage W. to lower gas prices.

    Then some Governor Granholm operative (or worse yet, some "educated" college student) stinks up my comment box with this blatherskite:

    Jay,
    Consider the fact that Granholm (and other Governors) have asked Bush to cap the profits for oil companies... A simple request that has been ignored.

    Another thing to consider is that Granholm actually has a plan to help the state. Her opponent, who is trying to unseat her this year, who you don't even mention here (His name is Dick DeVos FYI) has NO REAL PLAN for the state! DeVos is one of the richest guys in the world - the head of Amway - he of all people should be coming up with solutions to MI's problems. Or maybe he prefers to turn a deaf ear... like Bush?

    Ignorant crap, to say the least, from some Democratic operative.

    While it is a waste of time, I had to respond to this kind of bunk:
    Please.

    #1 - please at least address the evidence presented in the post. Of course, as a Democratic operative, I understand you don't want to give evidence.

    #2 - what possible Constitutional authority does the President(or any Governor) have for capping profits of any company? None.

    #3 - Granholm has a plan to help the state? Like what? Any specifics? Lowering tax burden? She's had four years to help the state.

    #4 - Why should I mention Dick DeVos in this post? First, he hasn't won the primary, so he isn't guaranteed to be her challenger (although he certainly is likely to get the nod).

    Second, what does he have to do with gas prices on the State of Michigan website?

    Third, his plan is of no consequence to this post.

    Fourth, if he is one of the richest men in the world, he certainly knows about making plans and following through on them.

    Fifth, President Bush, Governor Granholm, Dick DeVos, or any other politician won't come up with any solutions to Michigan's problems. Their business is manipulating our problems to stay (or get) into office. What will solve Michigan's problems is getting the governments un-Constitutional reach out of our lives and encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit. The entrepreneurial spirit made Detroit great. By the 1950's, the big government/big business noose destroyed the city. It hasn't recovered. Now the entire state is going down the drain.

    It seems like people get so hung up on the success of certain companies or certain individuals that they feel the need to punish success, which I find unbelievable...Un-Constitutional...Un-American. Two days ago, we celebrated Independence Day. Re-reading the Declaration of Independence (something Big Government people don't want us to do), I can't believe the freedom our Founding Fathers' envisioned for us, or their guts in signing such a document. It was certain death if Americans failed in war.

    Reading the Constitution and our Bill of Rights, they codified this vision of freedom... yet the Big Government types are out to screw it all up.

    Thomas Jefferson would vomit at the thought that a successful company should be punished by a Governor or the President. James Madison must roll over in his grave realizing we don't teach The Federalist Papers anymore - or else how could some people think Big Government is the answer?

    The answer is not in Big Government. It is in the raw determination, well-planned work, and resilience in the face of obstacles of each American to make a better future for themselves and for the citizens of this country. When Americans behave this way, something almost metaphysical or spiritual happens, and their success becomes contagious.

    Big Government types - please listen to this simple plea: read true American history. Government intervention didn't make this country great. Government's contribution was its reluctance to get involved in economic micromanagement. Once the government entered into this micromanagement, our country stumbled. We will fall completely if people have their way and corporate profits are capped. It is a small step from capping profits to complete communism.

    Karl Marx is not dead - he lives on in the thoughts, ideas, and actions of those who hate freedom, hate successful people, and those who wish to bury their head in the sand rather than understand and promote what made America a great nation.

    Is Your State in the Crapper? Why Not Blame W.?

    Ah, $2.27 a gallon gasoline - those were the days


    A few months ago, I visited the State of Michigan website to collect some information. Glaring right at me was a prominently displayed headline: "Sign Now to Lower Gas Prices."

    What does a government know about lowering prices?

    Already knowing what to expect, I took the bait and clicked on the link. I wasn't surprised at what I found. President Bush is the anti-Christ and responsible for high gas prices because he used to work in the oil business. I wasn't surprised when I read this a few months ago. With jobs leaving this state at dangerous speeds - during an election year, no less - the Governor needs a scapegoat.

    I went back to the State of Michigan website today for more information. Our Democratic governor's illustrious re-election campaign ads warn us that President Bush is at fault for all of Michigan's economic problems, so I wasn't surprised this "screw-the-evil-oil-man" junk was still on the web page. But really, about three months later - and that is all she can do? Blame W.? Come on.

    Michigan drivers are again facing the reality of $3-per-gallon gas - it’s time for President Bush and leaders in Washington to stop watching and start protecting us from the skyrocketing cost of gasoline! It's just not right that big oil companies should be allowed to hold customers hostage to outrageously expensive gas; they rake in billions in record-setting profits while consumers are left with no option but to pay ever-increasing prices.

    Consider these facts:

    The average price for unleaded gasoline is 64 cents higher than the same time last year.

    ExxonMobil reported a $36.1 billion in profit, making it the largest corporation in the world and larger than the next four companies on the Forbes 500 list combined.

    Oil prices have increased 240 percent since George Bush’s inauguration in January 2001.

    Nearly eight months ago, I and a group of concerned Governors urged the President to take action to bring down the sky-high prices of gasoline at America's gas pumps. We urged the President to bring the price of gas down for consumers by capping oil profits and using federal anti-trust laws to prosecute any companies pocketing extra profits in the wake of disasters like Hurricane Katrina. We also asked Congress to investigate energy profiteering and pass legislation requiring oil companies to refund excess oil profits to consumers.



    Well, for sake of argument let's say W. is responsible for lowering gas prices due to his executive position as President. That would mean Governor Jennifer Granholm, due to her executive position, also is responsible for lowering gas prices. In fact, she can provide almost immediate relief - as we see below. Think of how voters could repay her in November if she took the initiative to lowering their gas prices.

    And just, prey tell, how could she lower the prices?

    For starters, the EPA mandated all Midwest states add expensive ethanol to their gas mix. Ethanol doubled in price since last year. Tell the EPA "NO!"

    Next - lower the freakin' taxes on gasoline purchases. Michigan's tax on gasoline is 19.875 cents per gallon - plus there sales tax of 6% (approximately 17 cents a gallon at the $2.95 prices this morning), plus the Federal government share of the pie at 18.4 cents a gallon. Tax price alone translates into almost 55 cents a gallon.

    At the $2.95 per gallon price referenced, the tax burden alone on gasoline is almost 20%! Put a hold on the tax at the pump - voila, the price drops by almost 12.7% immediately.

    Some other facts about the State of Michigan:

    Estimated at 10.8% of income, Michigan’s state/local tax burden percentage ranks 16th highest nationally

    Michigan levies a Single Business Tax (SBT), which is a modified value-added tax (VAT), which screws the Small Business Owner running the gas station, which increases the prices.

    Michigan levies a 6% general sales or use tax on consumers... the national median is 5%.


    Something else regarding gas prices, Governor Granholm. A little rain storm called Hurricane Katrina did a little damage to this country's oil refining capacity. No surprise since refineries haven't been built in this country since Richard Nixon was President.

    What about the skyrocketing prices on barrels of oil - prices dictated by Middle East countries and Venezuela and the Market? What should W. do about that? He already catches enough BS from you and fellow Dems over Iraq and Afghanistan.

    Governor Granholm, why should any Michigan citizen sign the W. petition when you refuse to do anything to reduce the cost of gasoline with the many tools at your disposal?

    Castle Doctrine - Target: Michigan


    Late last week, the Michigan House and Senate
    overwhelmingly
    passed the Castle Doctrine package. What do I mean by overwhelming? Check the votes:

    HB 5142 House: 91 yeas, 16 nays Senate: 27 Yeas, 10 nays, 1 excused
    HB 5143 House: 90 yeas, 17 nays Senate: 28 Yeas, 10 nays
    HB 5153 House: 90 yeas, 17 nays Senate: 28 Yeas, 10 nays
    HB 5548 House: 90 yeas, 17 nays Senate: 28 Yeas, 10 nays
    SB 1046 House: 90 yeas, 17 nays Senate: 30 Yeas, 5 nays, 2 excused, 1 not voting
    SB 1185 House: 90 yeas, 17 nays Senate: 28 Yeas, 10 nays

    81.3% of legislators approved these bills.

    Now it is up to Governor Granholm to sign this into legislation.

    Michigan residents: Contact Governor Jennifer Granholm's office and encourage her to sign this legislation. This is an election year, and the state is in the crapper economically. She could use some solid PR in her re-election bid, rather than blame every problem on President Bush (as her current ads do).

    The Castle Doctrine will help the citizens of Michigan by clarifying the rights and duties of law-abiding citizens engaged in self-defense and/or in the defense of others. It also provides much needed immunity from civil liability for self-defense actions.


    One More Thing About Israel

    I am always impressed with how effective members of the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) are when they get a full green light to do something. I remember their cool daring raids at places like Entebbe and, of course, the Iraqi nuclear reactor project. More recent amazing things happened when they kept knocking off Hamas leaders to the degree that Hamas no longer announced who their leader was for a while.

    Now the IDF has been ordered to arrest the chairman of the PA's parliament, Abdel Aziz Dvik, along with two other parliament members - this after the IDF arrested 26 PA legislators and 8 Hamas government ministers last week.

    IDF forces surrounded their homes - but the wanted men are in hiding, running from the Israeli military.

    All's Not Quiet on the North-Eastern Front

    Israeli warplanes violated Syrian airspace last week, and without consequence. So what? Well, the problem is that they flew over the summer residence of Syrian President Bashar Assad, just reminding him that they could kick his, you know, anytime they pleased. President Assad, impotent to respond to the danger at the moment it reared its ugly face, now apparently plans to strike Israel with missles.

    Syria, of course, received some pretty cool missle technology from the Iranians. Picture this ugly scenario for the US and President Bush:

    Israel is our number one ally. We are ready to go to war with Iran soon. North Korea is lobbing missles now.


    We could have a major military conflict breaking out in a lot of different areas very soon.


    Israel captured a chunk of Syria in the Six-Day War (1967) known as the Golan Heights - real estate Syria has been trying to get back since that humiliating defeat. If they capture this highland, they have a strong position to rain down artillery all over Israel (see picture below).

    Gotta Love that Israeli Military


    The Israeli Defense Forces, working with the country's General Security Services, nabbed three terrorists from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party suspected of kidnapping and killing an 18-year old Israeli.

    The IDF closed in on a Palestinian police building late Monday night in Ramallah in which the three men were hiding. Israeli forces surrounded the building for more than three hours and called for the suspected murderers to come out. Finally, the Fatah gunmen surrendered their weapons and were taken into Israeli custody.

    Could We Say the Same Today?

    2nd Amendment Supporters, consider what was declared on July 4, 1776:

    The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,

    Is there anything unanimous in Congress anymore? Congress wasn't even united about fighting back against the thugs who attacked us on 9/11.

    When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

    The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals said that the Declaration of Independence is unconstitutional because it assumes there is a God. How did we let such utter stupidity and moral decay infest our courts?

    We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,
    You mean government isn't some kind of handout to take from the producers and give to the leeches?

    --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
    We get to "revolt" every two to four years through our ballot box. Sadly, about 80% of Americans are too apathetic to get out and vote. Thank God that wasn't the truth back in 1776 when brave men and women sacrificed their lives for the cause of freedom.

    Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.
    Let's look at our Bill of Rights... has there been a "long train of abuses and usurpations" regarding our God-given rights? What should our reponse be?

    --Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States.
    Haven't we put up with enough, or will we continue to tolerate this beast that takes away our rights?

    To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

    He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

    He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

    He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

    He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
    He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

    He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

    He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

    He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.

    He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

    He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.

    He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

    He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.

    He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
    For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
    For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
    For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
    For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
    For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
    For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences
    For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:

    For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:

    For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

    He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

    He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

    He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.

    He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

    He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.



    Reading many of these objections, I wonder if the Founding Fathers' are writing about King George or George W. Bush and our Congress?

    In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

    Not much different than our current government.

    Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.
    We have warned politicians not to betray our rights, yet pimp themselves to 2nd amendment supporters in every election as a friendlier alternative to their opponent. They scorn us and forget about us until the next election. Isn't it time to cease our prostitution?

    We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.
    If it weren't for the brave men and women in uniform, I'd have a lot less hope America could ever be restored- but as long as this country produces the quality men and women who serve in our Armed Forces, there is hope. They are fighting for our rights, our freedoms, and for the freedom of millions in other countries. Let's not sell them out by putting the same freedom-grabbing politicians in power every election cycle.

    On Tuesday, Americans across the nation will celebrate the 230th birthday of the United States of America. Everyone will be enjoying picnics, backyard barbeques, and the traditional fireworks display viewed throughout the country. Today, the armed forces of this republic are engaged in the monumental undertaking that determines if the democratic experiment begun on July 4th, 1776 will begin to sprout in the turbulent lands of the Middle East.

    It’s easy to forget the noble undertaking begun so long ago, easy to forget the auspicious beginning that gave hope to a world that a government can be ruled by its citizens. President George Washington warned Americans that they had a new responsibility when he stated in his first inaugural address, “The preservation of the sacred fire of liberty and the destiny of the republican model of government are justly considered, perhaps, as deeply, as finally, staked on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people.”

    From the birth of this Republic, the foundation of this country was the proposition that all men are created equal. As President Abraham Lincoln stated in the Gettysburg Address, “That this nation under God, Shall have a new birth of freedom - and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

    Abraham Lincoln envisioned that the guiding principles of the Declaration of Independence and the rights conveyed in the United States Constitution would be the foundation that humanity rests on, eloquently written in the Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” It’s instructive that many of our brave military men & women understand they are serving the cause of freedom enumerated in that cherished document, sacrificing and establishing the basic foundation of democracy in the unstable often volatile region of the Middle East.

    To the families of the fallen brings a special solemn meaning of sacrifice, as Margaret Johnson, mother of fallen Army Captain Christopher Johnson, stated in the Washington Times, “He knew the cost of freedom and that it was not free, and he volunteered to go to Iraq anyway.”

    The many Gold Star Families who lost a loved one in the war against terrorism have the courage and satisfaction that their loved ones sacrificed all in freedom’s cause. President Kennedy wrote in “Profiles in Courage” that, “In the days ahead, only the very courageous will be able to take the hard and unpopular decisions necessary for our survival in the struggle with a powerful enemy. Freedom cannot survive here if neighboring nations have lost theirs.

    The contemplation of the meaning of freedom is too often a vernacular of popular expression that easily reverberates in our dialogue as we discuss the rights embodied in the Constitution. Over time a tilt toward the direction of evil has contaminated the moral compass that we enjoy. Too often we have failed to realize that many regions and nations of the world still live under the cloud of totalitarianism, unable to enjoy the basic rights of man.

    Freedom and democracy include the participation of all, but too often many nations of the world are left in dark blanket of oppression that enslaves them to an endless abyss of misery. For freedom to be sowed, nations and individuals must be willing to stand up to the forces of evil or forever sentence future generations to a world without freedom.

    As the debate intensifies surrounding The War on Terror, many people throughout the vast expanse of the Middle East live as President Vaclav Havel lived under the banner of communism in Czechoslovakia. As the first President of his nation, after the fall of communism, stating in 1990, “That we live in a contaminated moral climate. We fell morally ill because we became used to saying something different from what we thought.”

    It seems many of us view July 4 as having little meaning beyond a day of watching fire works, and planning the backyard barbeque, but we fail as a nation to remember the history that is personified and articulated in the Declaration of Independence with the embodiment of individual liberty enshrined in the United States Constitution.

    Individual freedoms have been the hallmark and legacy that America brought to the world, not for the benefit of America, but for the benefit of humanity. We celebrate these rights, and cherish the fundamental rights of freedom of the press, freedom of speech, freedom to assemble, freedom of religion, but we fail to remember that millions around the world are denied these basic rights.

    Today in the spirit of that revolution that forever changed mankind, we are again building the fundamental foundation of democracy in a region that has only known terror and oppression. Americans too easily take for granted these basic rights, when we have been blessed with an overabundance of freedom that millions living under the yoke of oppression yearn for.

    Abraham Lincoln stated in a letter to Henry Pierce on April 6, 1859 that, "Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves; and, under a just God, can not long retain it."

    We often only look at our own circumstance without looking at the broader ramifications of our public discourse in regard to our intervention in Iraq. Alexander Solzhenitsyn stated in a Harvard Address in June 1978, “The Western world has lost its civil courage, both as a whole and separately, and in each country, each government, each political party and of course in the United Nations. Such a decline in courage is particularly noticeable among the ruling groups and the intellectual elite, causing an impression of loss of courage by the entire society.”

    Opponents of the War on Terror, often speak of love of the basic rights guaranteed under the Constitution, that they are defending what we hold sacred. These same individuals hide behind the very foundations on what this nation was founded on, secure in the beliefs that they have nothing to fear from a tyrannical government. Those who protest against our troops and the missions they are serving in do not offer a practical solution to help those suffering under the suffocating burden of a despotic regime.

    It’s easy to speak cavalierly about freedom if you are someone who has never fought for that freedom, when you live in the freest nation in the history of mankind. I note that those people seldom if ever mention the enslaved individuals behind the walls of tyranny in North Korea, Iran, and would have kept millions of Iraqi’s under the brutal dictatorship of Saddam Hussein.

    President Theodore Roosevelt said it best in Paris, France on April 23rd, 1910, “It is not the critic who counts: not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, because there is no effort without error or shortcoming, but who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself for a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat."

    Having served in Operation Enduring Freeom (Afghanistan) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraq), I witnessed first-hand the progress of people who are beginning to break the yoke of bondage that has enslaved them for generations. Many have stated that the people of the Arab and Muslim world do not want democracy imposed on them; we aren’t imposing democracy, but establishing the foundations of democracy, that only they can choose to implement and embrace.

    Last year Iraq witnessed three monumental elections that would have been unthinkable only a few years ago. I was moved as I stood there, looking into the faces of these eager pioneers who for the first time were controlling their own destiny. The elections in December 2005 witnessed over 70% of the Iraqi people voting in the first free election in the Middle East. Contrast that 70% turnout with our own election last month when we could barley get over 30% of eligible voters to participate in a primary election. I believe our founding fathers would have been embarrassed that so few Americans took part in the electoral process. What’s our excuse?

    Nobody including those who serve want conflict! Ask those who served during World War II if they wanted to serve, they didn’t of course, but they all knew that freedom is a cause worth defending. Those who find nothing important enough to them to be willing to defend and fight for, seem to me to be the sort of miserable creatures that John Stuart Mills wrote about. These people stand back and allow the forces of evil to gain a foothold in the hearts and minds of mankind.

    As Mills stated, “War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.”

    On this Fourth of July lets celebrate the principles of what this nation stands for: that freedom belongs to all mankind, and lets help lift the weight of tyranny so all mankind may enjoy the fruits of freedom. The revolution that started on July 4th 1776 sparked a desire in the hearts of men that man is destined to be free as our creator intended not to be enslaved, but free! Lets spread that same freedom to others or some day our own freedom will be in jeopardy! Lets stand for freedom for all!
