Repeal the Death Tax

Too many businesses, especially farmers and small enterprises, are forced to shut down in order to pay the estate taxes when the head of household dies. Families should not be punished for hard work and savings – they should be able to leave their businesses to their children.

Death should not be a taxable event.

In June, the Senate voted whether to consider legislation to permanently and completely repeal the tax. This bill was defeated, but following the defeat of full repeal in the Senate, the House of Representatives took up and passed an alternative measure that, while not fully repealing the tax, would permanently reduce the death tax rate and increase the amount of estate exempt from the tax to $5 million ($10 million per couple). The Senate is now likely to take up this permanent reform measure in July.

A permanent change in the law to lower the death tax rate and increase the amount of estate exempt from the tax is a better option than nothing, but we need your help in order to garner the 60 votes necessary to enact even this compromise measure.
